The Bard on the Beach

Shakespeare Santa Monica presents "The Merchant of Venice" at the Beach! Performances are sponsored by the City of Santa Monica, and attendance is free!!

Here on the verandah of the restored Marion Davies Guest House, the foppish Prince of Aragon tries to choose the right casket to win the hand of Portia - and discovers he's chosen a portrait of a fool - a mirror!

The company presents the plays of Shakespeare in eclectic, accessible environments. Tonight, if you're in town, catch a production of "Love's Labours Lost" performed in Santa Monica's Reed Park, Tennis Court #1. Suggested donation is $20.

What a brilliant idea! Like the modern costumes. And how nice to be able to sit outside without umbrellas!!

Free Summer Shakespeare is awesome. I remember taking a couple of visitors through Washington Square Park, which (since they were from small-town North Carolina and had just watched the movie Kids) freaked them out. A Midsummer Night's Dream ambushed us, courtesy of the Guerrilla Shakespeare Company. What a pleasant surprise that was.
